Plastic Pollution Sculpture Contest

ENTRIES ACCEPTED NOV 20, 2025 | CLOSES NOV 25, 2025 | WINNERS ANNOUNCED NOV 29, 2025

Encourage your students to take part in our Plastic Pollution Sculpture Contest—a creative way to celebrate our planet and raise awareness about the global plastic crisis. This is a fantastic opportunity to tie in environmental education with art and community engagement. We recommend starting with a class lesson on plastic pollution and brainstorming ways to reduce its impact. Educational resources are available upon request to support your teaching.

This year, entries will be accepted from four grade-level categories:

  • Grades K–2

  • Grades 3–5

  • Grades 6–8

  • Grades 9–12

Three winners will be selected from each category!

Submission Process

Each teacher may submit up to three sculptures per class. These top entries should be selected by the classroom teacher. Final judging will be conducted by local community members.

Judging Criteria

  • Must be a resident of Shasta County

  • Originality, creativity, and artistry

  • Clear and engaging messaging about plastic pollution

  • Adherence to all design and submission rules (see below)

  • Winning entries from the High School category may be featured in the Redding Christmas Lights Parade. All entries will be featured on our website

  • Winners will be announced on November 29, 2025

Rules for Sculpture Design

  • Choose one of two sculpture sizes:

    • Large: Not larger than 6' long X 3' high 3' wide. Must include hooks for hanging

    • Small: Up to 24” wide x 48” long x 36” high

  • Must reflect the theme: eliminating plastic pollution

  • Only recycled plastic waste—no new/virgin plastic

  • Must be original work (no copyrighted materials)

  • Created solely by student(s)—one sculpture per group

Plastic Pollution Poster Contest

Encourage your students to participate in our Plastic Pollution Poster Contest in honor of Earth Day—a creative opportunity to raise awareness about plastic pollution and inspire change through art. We recommend starting with a lesson on the plastic waste crisis, followed by class brainstorming on solutions and creative expression. We’re happy to provide literature and materials to support your teaching.

This year’s contest is open to students in four grade-level categories:

  • Grades K–2

  • Grades 3–5

  • Grades 6–8

  • Grades 9–12

Three winners will be selected from each group.

Submission Process

Each school may submit up to three posters total, as selected by the participating teachers. All final entries will be judged by local community members.

Judging Criteria

  • Must be a Shasta County resident

  • Originality, creativity, and artistry of the poster design

  • Clear and compelling messaging on the issue of plastic pollution

  • Full compliance with the poster design and submission rules (see below)

Rules for Poster Design

  • Posters must reflect the theme of eliminating plastic pollution

  • Only used/recycled plastic may be incorporated (no virgin plastic)

  • Work must be original and created by the student only

  • No copyrighted images or content

  • Posters must be created on either:

    • 8.5” x 11” paper

    • 11” x 17” paper

    • Or single-thickness poster board (no foam board or styrofoam)

  • Any 2D art media may be used: markers, pencils, paint, collage, photos, etc.

  • Posters should use bold colors and clear text for visibility and impact
